My home on Tweedside is nowhere near the Sea, but my upstairs bathroom takes me there. This is where I have my collection of sand from beach vacations. There is pink coral sand from Bermuda, black volcanic sand from St Kitts and white sand from Fort Myers Beach, Florida. Also Antigua, Haiti, St Martin, and The Bahamas. (I have a touch of wanderlust.) I love how each sample is unique to the location it originated. I keep my sand collection in antique green bottles. Seems quite fitting to me, as the green glass reminds me of the colour of the sea.
Last summer I found this chippy old chair at a yard sale (you guessed it) by the sea, near St Andrews. I adore the worn, old paint and it was perfect match to my bottles, so up to the bathroom it went. My hubby does not share my appreciation for “character” but he lets me have my way. He’s the best!
I also picked up this old commode last summer. It was in a storage unit near Fredericton and I got a good deal on it because it was scratched, chipped and needed to be refinished. Just the way I like it!
I gave it a base coat of Fusion Mineral Paint in Ash Grey. This paint covers like nothing else!! It is also very durable and you don’t need to prime or use a top coat sealer or wax. Easy!
Next, using the same brush I used with the Ash grey, I poured a little bit of Sterling grey and some Ceramic green into the same container (the one I used for the Ash grey).
I really worked the paint as I applied it. I had quite a sore wrist by the time I was finished. I wanted a nicely blended, worn look, like my old chair. The three colours worked so well together. I bought new hardware for this piece but when I removed the old pull from the door, there was a big hole that my new hardware wouldn’t cover. So I painted the old one with Fusion and put it right back on.. The drawer pull I had bought was silver and it didn’t look right so it got painted too! I “make do” a lot. This is the result.
Now I have extra storage for towels in my bathroom and the pop of colour really makes me happy.
And this is how I bring the Sea to Tweedside. The funny thing is, I also brought Tweedside to the Sea (my shop, Tweedside Road Home Décor is located in St Andrews by the Sea). Have a great day!
